Itaboraí is situated in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro, in the litoral lowland areas on the shores of Guanabara Bay, 45 km away from the capital. In this city you can find the oldest and most important panteological site of Brazil, on the shores of São José lake, where the fossils of a giant sloth had been found out, in 1986 – a genuine archaeological treasure of Brazilian archelogy. It is therefore a city with a rich historical, cultural and artistic heritage, moreover, the greatest architectural collection.
